Our laboratory aims at providing a quality diagnostics service both to the staff veterinarians and the local veterinary professionals. We cover a range of tests in the field of bacteriology, mycology, haematology, biochemistry, parasitology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.
We accept samples from companion, exotic, zoo and wildlife species. Our dedicated laboratory staff are happy to discuss the results and give technical advice. Our veterinarians can offer free veterinary advice.
Please call the laboratory on 04-3401060 or email us lab@nadvethosp.com if you don’t find your test on the list or if you are looking for a new diagnostic test.
BACTERIOLOGY
Bacteriology test prices include aerobic and anaerobic culture of swabs, fluid, tissue. Identification of the isolated species is carried out as far as possible. When IDENTIFICATION is stated under a bacteriology test, the API kits are used (available for Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Enterobacteriaceae, non-fastidious non-enteric Gram-negative rods, anaerobes, Coryneform bacteria).
Sensitivity testing is performed on pure isolates. Sensitivity is not run on mixed growths unless a significant species or potential pathogens are present. The following antimicrobial profiles are included into sensitivity testing:
| Avian: | Tobramycin, Ceftazidime, Augmentin, Erythromycin, Doxycycline, Enrofloxacin, Clindamycin, Cotrimoxazole |
| Reptiles: | Amikacin, Augmentin, Ceftazidime, Enrofloxacin, Tobramycin, Oxytetracycline, Piperacillin, Cotrimoxazole |
| Mammals: | Amoxycillin, Augmentin, Cephalexin, Clindamycin, Enrofloxacin, Oxytetracycline, Streptomycin, Cotrimoxazole |
| Primates: | Amikacin, Amoxycillin, Augmentin, Cephalexin, Doxycycline, Enrofloxacin, Erythromycin, Cotrimoxazole |
| Metronidazole is added to the profile when an anaerobe is isolated. |
| Please contact the laboratory if you prefer certain antibiotics. |
Our laboratory will supply you with a special culture bottle if you request blood culture.

MYCOLOGY
Hair, skin, swabs and tissue biopsies can be submitted for isolation of Aspergillus sp., yeasts & dermatophytes. Identification of fungae is provided on the basis of colony characteristics and microscopic morphology of the isolates. We don’t offer fungal susceptibility testing.
- Aspergillus & yeast culture
- Dermatophytes culture
HAEMATOLOGY
Please supply EDTA blood (minimum 1 ml) and at least one air dried blood smear. RBC of tortoises, terrapins, turtles & some avian species (mynah, ostrich, magpie etc.) haemolyse in EDTA. Therefore, send both EDTA (for WBC) & Heparin (for RBC) samples. Fibrinogen estimation is not possible in this case.
- Avian/Reptile/Exotics Full Blood Count
- (WBC, RBC, PCV, Haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, WBC Differential, Absolute & % count)
- Mammal Full Blood Count
- (WBC, RBC, PCV, Haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, PLT, WBC Differential, Absolute & % count)
- Blood smear assessment
- (WBC Differential, comments on cell morphology, comments on blood parasites)
- Fibrinogen
- Thrombocytes count
BIOCHEMISTRY
We can test blood, urine and CSF. Supply minimum of 1 ml of serum or heparin blood. We will need min. 200 ml of serum or plasma to run a separate test. Bile acids require serum sample only. Notify us what are your preferences for biochemical tests in case of smaller animals (e.g. budgerigars). The blood tubes should be centrifuged if possible and plasma/serum separated before transport to avoid haemolysis.

TOXICOLOGY
CYTOLOGY
We stain smears, impressions, biopsies to observe Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast cells, fungal hyphae, Mycobacterium, Chlamydophila, Brucella, Nocardia, and to detect inflammation & cellular changes.
PARASITOLOGY
We prepare direct smears from faeces, vomit, crop swabs, skin scrapes and identify observed parasites as far as possible. We run semi-quantitative salt flotation on small animals. We can perform egg/larvae count.
